Back Why is concrete finishing important for industrial floors?

Concrete finishing plays an essential role in ensuring that you are left with a high quality, durable concrete floor slab.

What is concrete finishing?

For those unfamiliar with the installation process for industrial concrete flooring, concrete finishing is the process undertaken to ensure that the concrete reaches its full potential. Concrete finishers use a number of techniques, such as screeding and power floating, to ensure that your concrete floor is completely level, achieves optimum compressive strength, and has a minimum chance of cracking or crazing.

What techniques do concrete finishers use?

The exact methodology involved in finishing a concrete floor will vary depending on the specification of the project, however, there are a number of techniques that are commonly employed by concrete finishers:

1. A screed tool and sometimes a laser screed machine are first used to distribute the concrete evenly and ensure an level surface.

2. If a dust topping is being applied, a spreader is used to apply the dust to the concrete.

3.1 If a brush surface finish is chosen (a popular choice for farm yards and other agricultural establishments), the concrete finisher will drag a brush over the surface of the fresh concrete to produce a course, anti-slip surface.

3.2 A tamped concrete finish (popular for its improved drainage qualities) is created by raising and lowering a compacting beam at regular intervals to create a grooved pattern.

3.3 Power trowels and sit on power float machines can be used to create a smooth, level and highly polished surface finish

4. All industrial concrete floors should then be sealed.
