Have you ever wondered why two concrete floors installed in similar conditions can perform so differently over time? The answer almost always comes down to finishing.
For facility managers, contractors, and business owners investing in industrial concrete finishing, choosing the right approach, and the right concrete finishers, makes all the difference between a floor that lasts decades and one that deteriorates within years.
In this guide, we'll walk you through everything you need to know about the concrete finishing process, from concrete finishing techniques to equipment to long-term benefits.
Concrete floor finishing is the process of levelling, compacting, treating, and texturing freshly poured concrete before it fully cures. It's not simply a cosmetic step. Skilled concrete finishers are responsible for ensuring the surface is structurally sound, free from defects, and set to the correct pitch and depth for its intended use.
From protecting the slab as it cures to preparing it for heavy operational demands, the finishing process is where quality is truly established. At Nationwide Concreting, our experienced concrete flooring specialists follow a proven, methodical approach using specialist tools and machinery to deliver results that hold up under real-world pressure.
The benefits of concrete finishing extend well beyond appearance. Industrial concrete finishing is demanding work, and the consequences of getting it wrong can be costly. A poorly finished floor is vulnerable to cracking, surface dusting, and delamination, all of which can disrupt operations and require expensive remedial work.
When done correctly, the concrete finishing process delivers:
Put simply, proper finishing protects your investment from the ground up.
Understanding the concrete finishing process helps you appreciate why each stage matters. At Nationwide Concreting, we follow a structured sequence to ensure every floor is finished to the highest standard:
Each step is carefully managed by our experienced team to ensure the finished floor meets your precise requirements.
Choosing the right finish depends on how your floor will be used, where it's located, and what level of durability or texture is required. Let’s now take a closer look at the types of concrete finishes we most commonly deliver.
Laser screed is the essential first stage of the concrete finishing process, establishing a flat, even base before any surface treatment begins. We use high-powered Vibro-Strike vibrating screed units to compact wet concrete efficiently and accurately.
For larger or more complex projects, our Somero S-22EZ laser screed machine takes precision further, using laser technology to constantly monitor and adjust the levelling head height, ensuring a consistently flat result across the entire slab.
A brush concrete finish is created by drawing a wire brush across freshly levelled concrete, producing a textured, non-slip surface suited to external and high-traffic areas. The texture achieved depends on the bristle type and rigidity: wire bristles produce a more pronounced texture, while softer bristles create a lighter one.
Purpose-made concrete brushes are always used, as standard cleaning brushes tend to produce inconsistent results. This finish is particularly well suited to car parks, loading areas, and external yards where grip and drainage are priorities.
A tamped concrete finish is formed by moving a wooden tamping beam up and down in quick succession along the surface of the fresh concrete, producing a series of horizontal grooves that significantly improve grip. This finish is a strong choice for agricultural settings, external yards, and areas exposed to wet conditions.
Groove spacing of between 20 and 30mm with a depth of approximately 5mm is standard practice, and our team works carefully to keep those grooves as even as possible for both performance and appearance.
For smooth, power-floated floors, a dust topping is applied before the floating process begins. Pre-mixed powders are spread across the surface using a topping spreader, enhancing abrasion resistance and, in some cases, introducing colour finishes. The powder is worked into the surface during the power-floating process, creating a smooth, durable, and visually appealing result.
This technique is well suited to warehouses, factories, and retail environments where both performance and presentation matter.
Power float concrete finishing is carried out once all bleed water has evaporated from the surface, a detail that's easy to overlook but critical to the quality of the result. We use the Whiteman HTN Series Power Trowel, fitted first with circular steel panning discs and then with steel finishing blades, to progressively smooth, recompact, and refine the surface.
The result is a highly polished, durable finish that's a popular choice for industrial sites, distribution centres, and commercial spaces requiring a clean, professional floor.
Once the concrete finishing process is complete, sealing is the final, important step for any industrial floor. A quality concrete sealer protects the surface against dust, moisture, oil penetration, and everyday surface wear, all of which can compromise a floor's longevity if left unaddressed.
Sealing also simplifies ongoing maintenance, reducing the frequency and cost of cleaning and helping the floor retain its appearance and performance for longer. As part of our full concrete finishing service, we can advise on the most appropriate sealing solution for your sector, your environment, and your operational demands.
