Back IKEA’s Greenwich Store Awarded ‘Outstanding’ Sustainability Rating

IKEA’s new store in Greenwich, London, has been awarded the highest possible sustainability rating by the Building Research Establishment (BRE).

The leading building science organisation awarded the retail unit ‘outstanding’ in the BREEAM UK New Construction Certification, which rates the sustainability of new builds. The IKEA store achieved a rating of over 90%, making it just the first building in the UK and second worldwide to achieve such a merit.

The Greenwich store was built with sustainability firmly in mind and incorporates plenty of natural light, solar power, LED lighting, rainwater harvesting and renewable construction materials as part of the build. It even has three landscape gardens, including a roof garden, to support insect and plant life.

Nationwide Concreting is very proud to have worked alongside Andrew Cowie Construction and McLaughlin & Harvey Ltd to provide the concrete flooring for this historic project. The concrete floor slab equated to 15,150m2 in total and required 11 pours of roughly 344m3 to complete. We then used Sika’s SynTop Dry Shake in Light Grey combined with power floating to achieve the perfect finish. You can read more about the project and see images from the development in our case study.

We are constantly developing our techniques in an effort to reduce our environmental impact and provide sustainable concrete floors.
