Concrete Floor Slab For IKEA Greenwich

This large-scale concrete flooring project was completed in 11 separate pours, each delivering approximately 344m³ of concrete. Our concrete flooring specialists designed the retail slab using 50kg of 1/60 steel fibres per cubic metre, carefully integrating these fibres into the concrete mix. Steel fibres were essential for providing enhanced tensile strength and preventing cracking, which is particularly important in high-traffic retail environments like IKEA, where the flooring is subjected to heavy loads from foot traffic and merchandise.

One of the project's key challenges was ensuring long-term durability and smooth transitions across the entire floor slab. To address this, we installed over 1,400m of Alpha Joint from RCR Flooring. Alpha Joint is a high-performance armoured joint that plays a critical role in reinforcing the edges of concrete slabs, preventing damage and maintaining structural integrity. This was particularly crucial in the context of a retail environment, where joint failure can lead to costly repairs and operational disruption.

Concrete Finishing Process: A Perfect Finish with Sika Syntop

Once the concrete slabs were in place, our expert concrete finishing team took over. The floor was fully power floated, which is a specialized technique for smoothing and leveling concrete surfaces. Power floating not only enhances the floor's aesthetic appeal but also improves its durability by closing the surface and making it resistant to wear.

For this project, we used Sika Syntop 2 Light Grey, a high-quality dry shake topping that further increased the floor's abrasion resistance and gave it a sleek, uniform finish. The choice of Sika Syntop 2 was essential in creating the defect-free surface that both Andrew Cowie Construction and IKEA required.

The final result was a flawless, defect-free retail concrete floor that exceeded expectations in terms of both durability and appearance. Our client and IKEA were extremely satisfied with the outcome, and the floor is set to withstand years of heavy use while maintaining its pristine condition.
